Hi,

The attachment is the part I've made for the ICD2 RJ12 connector on the
target board. Can some kind soul just tell me if I've got the pinout right?

TIA,
Colin

Hi Colin,

The pinout is not correct if you want it to be compatible with the Microchip
ICD 2 and the Microchip-supplied cable.
The pinout you have is how its pinned at the ICD 2 itself, not how its
pinned at the target.

Grasshopper, you have 2 more tries. :)

Seriously, re-do it , post it, and I'd be happy to double-check it.

Just download the ICD 2 poster from www.microchip.com and you'll see what
you are doing wrong.

Colin, please don't feel bad or embarrassed -- at least you did not send out
the board yet.

Best regards,

Ken Pergola

Looks like I'm going to need them. I'm looking at (I think) the ICD 2
poster:

First, looking at the top and mouth end of the jack, pin 1 is on the left,
pin 6 on the right.

Then, Designer's oard Modular Connector Pinout (that would be the target
board I'm making, yes?):
1 Not Used
2 RB6
3 RB7
4 Ground
5 Vdd
6 Vpp

Which looks like what I've got, no?

Colin (confused)

Hi Colin,

If you are using the same RJ12 jack that Microchip uses and if you are suing
the same cable Microchip uses, the signal pinout in your attached file are
still incorrect.

Colin, maybe you are forgetting the fact that the Microchip-supplied cable
reverses the pinout.

In other words:

The wire crimped to Pin 1 on RJ12 connector cable becomes Pin 6 at the other
end.
The wire crimped to Pin 2 on RJ12 connector cable becomes Pin 5 at the other
end.
The wire crimped to Pin 3 on RJ12 connector cable becomes Pin 4 at the other
end.
The wire crimped to Pin 4 on RJ12 connector cable becomes Pin 3 at the other
end.
The wire crimped to Pin 5 on RJ12 connector cable becomes Pin 2 at the other
end.
The wire crimped to Pin 6 on RJ12 connector cable becomes Pin 1 at the other
end.

If you want your target to be Microchip ICD 2 compatible you want your
target RJ-12 pinout as such:

Pin 1: /MCLR/Vpp
Pin 2: Vdd
Pin 3: Ground
Pin 4: PGD
Pin 5: PGC
Pin 6: Not used

Attached is how the target pinout should be -- I added the pin signals in
red.
Does this make sense now? If not just let me know where you are getting hung
up.

Colin, just to give you a warm fuzzy feeling, wire up the jack on a
protoboard and use the ICD 2 to program a target part using it.
Then you'll have 100% confidence before sending out your board for fab.

Hope this gets you on track.

Feel free to ask again if this does not make sense.

Best regards,

Ken Pergola

Hi Colin,

Download the ICD 2 poster (DS51265C):

http://www.microchip.com/1010/pline/tools/picmicro/icds/icd2/10013/

This will give you a different perspective than MPLAB's online help ICD 2
pinout.
(The pinouts are correct in both Microchip documents)

Best regards,

Ken Pergola

Thanks a lot, Ken. The poster is pretty clear. I was looking at something
completely different:

Thanks again,
Colin
