Hi all,

I mainly do hobby stuff and I still have a 30 odd year old Hung Chang
analog scope that still works, but I would like to get some digital
monitoring as well so was looking at scopes like the Siglent SDS2102X
or similar.

I was wondering if anyone has any ideas.

cheers

Tony

I have a Rigol DS1054Z on the manufacturing line (automated test) that I'm
pretty happy with. If I was looking for a hobby scope that's what I'd
get, possibly with some of the add-on options.

I tried to use a low-end siglent in this application and wasn't all that
happy for various reasons, although it seemed to be at least somewhat
usable. Others seem really happy with them.

I have an older Rigol 2 channel scope that I've been happy with. My next
scope will likely be the Rigol 1054 mentioned already. There have been
many times I wanted for an extra channel. The newer models have features
that I'd like as well, such as the ability to decode/recognize serial
protocols.

I don't like the Agilent digital scopes, they don't fit with my mental processes. The other trick I have found is that they use WinXP as the underlying operating system, and one we had used Excel to handle all the screen graphing functions, which made it horrendously slow, as the underlying processor hardware was not exactly up to the job of handling all the MS software at an acceptable speed.

I find the Tektronix scopes suit my mental processes much better. The low end ones seem to have reasonable functions at acceptable prices, and all the 4000 series and down do not use Windows as the underlying operating system. The higher end ones do, with the oscilloscope application running on top, although this appears to be a proprietary app rather than a hidden MS application to display the waveforms.

Similar to the Agilent ones, I find the Philips originated 'scopes marketed by Fluke don't fit my mental processes, the European way of thinking is different to mine in the way the inner workings are set up. The Philips originated line are discoverable as models containing P at the beginning of the model number.

I'm using a Rigol DS1054Z. I did not choose it by comparison though,
so I can't say what I'd gain or lose on a Siglent of similar price.

I have acquired one of mine from work. My old job was with a high speed IO
company and they considered 1GS four channel scope as slow, 10 years back.
Obsolescence and high cost of repair are the main reasons why the companies
get rid of them.

Although I paid a reasonable price for this Agilent equipment, the scope is
too big to fit on my desk. I still have one with CRT :-)

Try to see if you can buy an obsolete one (100MHz or better) from your
local semiconductor companies. Dumpster diving in tech area is another
alternative. I saw quite a few on craigslist as well.

Of-course you can buy a Rigol two channel in case there is nothing
available.

I bought an Owon SDS 7102 at home. Good price, works as advertised
(maybe a little better - it shows well to 150 MHz - 100 Mhz spec'd). If
you ever want remote control though, there are issues with the LAN
network connections. Downloading a screenshot works, but remote control
is shaky.

Included probes feel and look good. Screen is gorgeous...
