Discussion:
[EE] BLE Beacon

I have an application where I'd like to have a device know if it is in
this room or that room. I'm thinking of putting a BLE beacon in each room
and use RSSI to figure out which one the receiver is closer to. It SEEMS
like there would be a standard device about the size of a large coin cell
that would transmit its ID every now and then (once every minute or two
would work for this application) and have a battery life of about 10
years.

Anyone familiar with such a device?

Thanks!

Harold

Probably a bit larger than you're looking for but I would look at some of
the microchip Bluetooth modules, particularly the rn ones. The wifi
versions can be configured in timed transmission modes, I wouldn't be
surprised to find the ble version does as well.

Thanks! All the modules I see there need to be mounted on a PCB and put in
a cabinet. I'm hoping to find a ready to use BLE beacon that just
transmits its ID every minute or so. There might be a dozen of these in a
building, one in each room, and I want a mobile device to be able to
figure out which room it is in.

If you go AliExpress and search for BLE beacon, or iBeacon, you'll find plenty in all
shapes and sizes. I did a little research for a project that never eventuated, though
didn't purchase any modules for it... used an android app to make my phone a
beacon and another free app on a tablet to detect the beacon.
