Discussion:
[EE] Identifying components with short codes

Hi,
I've spent the whole day on the Fairchild (ON) site, without solving anything.

It has the following text in it:

F (Fairchild logo) D812AN (or maybe it's DB12AN)
Below it has 14CL40 (I guess the date of production, or other info like that).
Package is D2PAK

Can you help me to find what it is exactly? I guess a MOSFET N.. but which one?

Is there, more in general, a web site where one can put the short markings seen
on the component, and that will help identify full code?

With kind regards,
Mario

The**14CL40 is an IGTB transistor designed for automotive ignition coil
driver applications.  The International Rectifier part number is IRGS14C40L.

Thank you very much. May I ask you if you simply knew it, or if there is a
sort of the method to identify them? This would sure be of interest to others
as well.

With kind regards,
Mario

I have come across devices that have had the conventional positions of
part code (above) and production code (below) swapped, so I simply
searched for 14CL40 rather than D812AN.

Thank you. Yes, it is indeed a 14C40 (ignition coil driver, exactly that).

Have a nice weekend.

Perhaps Fairchild made it under license of IR.

But it's certainly what Mike said, i.e. an IGBT used for Inductive Discharge
Ignition.

Based on Mario's input:

Digikey

14C40

14CL40 - no result

The funny thing is that I indeed had searched in Digikey, Mouser and others,
but I searched for D812A and DB12A and variants ("F" before, without A, etc..).

I was convinced that 14C40 was the date of manufacturing (year and week).

Cheers,
Mario
