Worth a read for various comments.

This image from the Deep Space Climate Observatory (DSCOVR) satellite
captured a unique view of the Moon as it moved in front of the sunlit side
of Earth in 2015. It shows a view of the farside of the Moon, which faces
the Sun, that is never directly visible to us here on Earth. I found this
perspective profoundly moving and only through our satellite views could
this have been shared.

Since it's [OT]:

<sarcasm>You can't trust this data, it's from NASA. Anything which shows
the earth is round is obviously faked and part of the round earth
conspiracy. After all, it's plain and obvious the earth is flat. Anyone
can tell this just by looking at the horizon.</sarcasm>

(And no, I don't believe this for a minute).

Did anyone else notice a green band around the right-hand limb of the moon?
Image compression artefact?

Sean et al: They explain it in the text on the NASA page. See below.

I had thought it looked like "regular" chromatic aberration which usually
gives green on a high contrast edge and purple on the contrasting opposite
edge. But their was no major purple fringe - maybe a vague hint but not
what you'd usually get.

But it is "something else". The images are taken using series RGB imaging
(presumably filters) and each of the 3 images are separated by about 30
seconds from adjacent ones. When they are combined, presumably physically
shifted, you get the green edge where they do not align. That leads to all
sorts of questions. Presumably they do this to get maximum resolution with
eac colour having full sensor resolution, and only one sensor is needed.
And presumably they may often only need a monochrome image. And ... . What
affect does the offset have on image quality? Is it allowed for by pixel
shifting or ...? Is it in fact a whole image sensor or is it already
scanned over eg 20 seconds before the RGB images are combined?
Is/does/how/what/ ... ? Probably all such information is available
somewhere.

Some modern 35mm digital cameras have a multi exposure pixel offset mode
where the sensor is moved between shots using the "anti-shake" mechanism
thereby increasing effective sensor resolution.

Russell

EPIC’s “natural color” images of Earth are generated by combining three
separate monochrome exposures taken by the camera in quick succession. EPIC
takes a series of 10 images using different narrowband spectral filters --
from ultraviolet to near infrared -- to produce a variety of science
products. The red, green and blue channel images are used in these color
images.

Combining three images taken about 30 seconds apart as the Moon moves
produces a slight but noticeable camera artifact on the right side of the
Moon. Because the Moon has moved in relation to the Earth between the time
the first (red) and last (green) exposures were made, a thin green offset
appears on the right side of the Moon when the three exposures are
combined. This natural lunar movement also produces a slight red and blue
offset on the left side of the Moon in these unaltered images.
